Dublin to Srinagar, Gandhi Steps on Barbed Wire at 150
In 2019 I was blessed by an opportunity to bring two very talented friends together to create a work to mark the 150th anniversary of Muhatma Gandhi’s birth. My friend Gabriel Rosenstock, one of Ireland’s foremost bilingual poets, author/translator, children’s writer and haikuist, was working on a book of haiku on the life and ideas of Gandhi, and I knew just the illustrator to bring his words to life. So I called my friend Masood Hussain, a well-known Srinagar-based artist, and asked him to create the illustration. Gabriel and Masood inspired each other as much as they inspire me and their audiences.
Chitra Padmanabhan did a lovely review on the Wire.in: ‘Walk with Gandhi’ glows with Gabriel Rosenstock’s haiku and Masood Hussain’s watercolour images. For the artist, now cut off from the world due to the Kashmir lockdown, the book is a piercing reminder of Gandhi’s continued relevance.
